Caraway cookware review: real test reports, secret recipe

Caraway has the best testing disclosure of any coated pan we have checked — a public hub, a named laboratory and a linked report. The limit is that a test only finds what it looks for.

Caraway does the thing we keep asking brands to do: it publishes. There is a testing hub, a named laboratory, and a report you can open covering over 200 PFAS compounds and more than twenty heavy metals.

That is rare enough that it deserves saying before the criticism. Almost nobody else in coated cookware does it at all.

What the score is, before you read one

It is a disclosure score out of 100, not a safety rating: what it is made of, who tested it, where it is made, whether the claim matches the evidence. A pan can score 20 and be perfectly fine to cook in. What a low score means is that nobody outside the company can check. The rubric is here.

What they publish, point by point

Caraway Ceramic Fry Pan — 53/100 · coated, or plastic in contact

$125 (10.5in)

  • What touches the food — 34/60. Ceramic sol-gel coating on aluminium · coating recipe not published
  • The rest of it — 13/25. Lids, seals, handles and the outside.
  • Backed up — 6/15. Testing or compliance asserted, with no laboratory named and no report published.
  • Made in. UNVERIFIED
  • They claim. "Made without PTFE, PFOA, PFAS, lead, and cadmium"
  • Warranty. 1 year — excludes coating damage from high heat

Best testing disclosure of any coated pan here: a public testing hub, a named laboratory (Light Labs) and a linked report, covering over 200 PFAS compounds and 20+ heavy metals. But the coating recipe itself is proprietary, so whatever the tests did not look for stays unknown. They do not publish total organic fluorine, which is the screening test that would catch PFAS they weren’t looking for.

What we’d want you to know:

  • No country of manufacture stated anywhere we could find — only “mindfully manufactured in BSCI-certified factories”. That is not a country.
  • The warranty is one year and explicitly excludes coating deterioration from high heat, thermal shock and metal utensils — which tells you what Caraway expects to go wrong.
  • August 2025: the National Advertising Division found Caraway did have a reasonable basis for its own “PFAS-free” and “non-toxic” product claims, but recommended it discontinue comparative claims disparaging competitors, including its framing of rising “Teflon flu” cases.
  • February 2026: Groupe SEB and Meyer sued Caraway in the Southern District of New York for false advertising, commercial disparagement and trade libel. It is pending with no ruling. Draw nothing from it yet. Note also that Groupe SEB owns All-Clad, which is also in this table.

Our verdict

The best-tested coated pan here, held back by one structural problem. The coating recipe is proprietary, so the tests can only look for compounds somebody thought to look for. Whatever is in the coating that was not on the list stays unknown, and no amount of testing against a list closes that gap.

The screening test that would is total organic fluorine — it measures fluorine of any kind rather than named compounds, and one 2025 analysis found extractable organic fluorine accounted for less than 15% of the total fluorine actually present. Caraway does not publish it. Neither does anyone else.

They also do not name a country of manufacture, which costs them the origin points outright, and the warranty excludes coating damage from high heat — worth reading before you buy a non-stick pan you intend to get hot.
