Is GreenPan safe? What the claim actually commits them to

GreenPan says more about its coating chemistry than most brands, and then writes its headline claim in a way that quietly narrows it. Both things are true, and the sentence is worth reading twice.

We cannot tell you whether a GreenPan is safe to cook on. We have no laboratory, and anybody claiming otherwise from a desk is guessing.

What we can do is read the claim. And GreenPan’s is one of the more interesting sentences in this category, because it contains two different promises wearing one coat.

What the score is, before you read one

It is a disclosure score out of 100, not a safety rating: what it is made of, who tested it, where it is made, whether the claim matches the evidence. A pan can score 20 and be perfectly fine to cook in. What a low score means is that nobody outside the company can check. The rubric is here.

What they publish, point by point

GreenPan Valencia Pro Frypan — 57/100 · coated, or plastic in contact

$99.99 (12in, from $149.99)

  • What touches the food — 34/60. Thermolon ceramic sol-gel on hard-anodised aluminium · silicon-based
  • The rest of it — 17/25. Lids, seals, handles and the outside.
  • Backed up — 6/15. Testing or compliance asserted, with no laboratory named and no report published.
  • Made in. UNVERIFIED — “we own our factory”
  • They claim. "Our PFAS-free Ceramic Nonstick is Made Without Intentionally Added PFAS"
  • Warranty. Limited lifetime, defects

Says more about its coating chemistry than most — silicon-based, from a sand derivative — and names the four regimes the coating was tested against. Then undercuts it with the widest gap between claim and substantiation on this page.

What we’d want you to know:

  • The claim is written as “Our PFAS-free Ceramic Nonstick is Made Without Intentionally Added PFAS”. Those are two different claims in one sentence, and only the second one is a commitment. It permits residual PFAS from feedstock or process.
  • On testing they are more specific than most: Thermolon “was tested by third-party labs, and is certified safe according to USA Food & Drug Administration, German LFGB, Swiss government, and KTR standards”. Four named regimes is more than a bare assertion, so that is more than most. It stops short of full marks because no laboratory is named and no certificate is published or downloadable — you are asked to take the conclusion on trust.
  • Does not address lead or cadmium on the product page or the toxins FAQ we checked.
  • A 2019 class action over “0% Toxins” and “completely toxin free” marketing ended in dismissal with prejudice. Reporting suggests a settlement; we could not verify the terms or the docket entry, and GreenPan’s own account is that it concluded “with no findings of liability and no admission of wrongdoing”. Both of those can be true at once.

Our verdict

More forthcoming than most on chemistry, and then it undercuts itself on the claim. GreenPan will tell you the coating is silicon-based and derived from sand, and it names four regulatory regimes it was tested against. That is genuinely more than Our Place or Caraway offer on composition.

Then it writes the headline as “PFAS-free … Made Without Intentionally Added PFAS”. Those are not the same statement. The first is absolute; the second is a manufacturing commitment that says nothing about what might be present unintentionally. That gap is the four points.

The test that would close it is total organic fluorine, which screens for fluorine of any kind rather than a list of named compounds. Nobody in this category publishes it, and targeted testing has been shown to miss most of what is there.
